Know Your NTSE

NTSE or National Talent Search Examination is a national level exam conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for granting scholarships to meritorious students studying in class X. It provides financial assistance to talented students in the form of a monthly scholarship for their entire academic career. NTSE is conducted in two stages—the first at state-level, the second at a national level.

NTSE is an offline examination conducted once a year for class X students. It is a scholarship exam conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training. The exam is for class 10th students.

Students need to have procured 60% in their class IX annual examination in order to appear for level 2. It is therefore important to make preparation for this exam beforehand so that one can easily qualify for level 2.

NTSE has two stages—the first at state-level, qualifying which students can appear for the national level. The first stage is as important as the second stage. Hence candidates must aim to succeed in the first round of selection.

The duration of the examination is 4 hours for each level. Candidates will have to sit for 4 hours at a stretch to complete the papers. They need to attempt objective type questions with multiple choices carefully.

The state-level exam can be taken in English, Hindi or a few selected regional languages, and the national-level exam in Hindi or English medium only. With ample choices available, candidates can opt for any medium.

Each level has two papers—MAT (Mental Ability Test) and SAT (Scholastic Ability Test), of 100 marks each. The former tests problem-solving and reasoning abilities while the latter assesses from a good number of subject papers.

Scholarship amounts, awarded till the PhD stage, will be as per the discretion of the NCERT. NTSE Scholars are entitled to get a scholarship only if they study in India. The UGC also grants scholarships to NTSE scholars for PHD.

NTSE scholars get preference in the Defence Examinations like NDA.

  • Application Process: To apply for the NTSE examination, students can do it through their respective schools. The submission of the applications then takes place by the schools to the State/UT authorities.
  • Exam Format: The NTSE examination comprises of two papers. The Mental Ability Test (MAT) evaluates the logical and analytical abilities where as the Scholastic Aptitude Tests measures the conceptual knowledge.
